What is Breathwork?

Breathwork is a simple and powerful ancient technique, used to harmonize and  heighten your physical, mental and emotional state.  It’s simplicity makes it’s accessible to anyone. Once you’ve learnt the techniques it is your first aid tool to use any time.

In yogic philosophy, the practice of directing your breath is called Pranayama. Prana means life force (which is sustained by breathing),  while Yama means to control. By practicing Pranayama breathing exercises, you can increase your life force and let it nourish and sustain your entire body.  The act of conscious and directed breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system bringing about numerous benefits to your body and mind.  Let's explore the power of your breath!

What does the 4 part advanced breathwork cover?

Rock Balancing

Here is a great opportunity to solidify your Breathwork practice. This is an advanced course and intended for those who have participated in a previous event with me. Over the 4 sessions, delivered once a week, we will explore some advanced elements of breathwork to further help you unlock the power of your daily practice.

Session 1  -  BREATH HOLDS
Session 2  -  FULL YOGIC BREATH AND ENERGY LOCK
Session 3  -  MANTRA INVOCATION
Session 4  -  FULL BREATHWORK EXPERIENCE

Session1-  Breath Holds
Holding the breath in yoga is called Kumbhaka.  While it sounds simple, breath holds are powerful in reconditioning the nervous system.  There are two types of breath holds - holding the breath after inhalation (Antara Kumbhaka) and holding the breath after exhalation (Bahya Kumbhaka).  The dynamics of each are different and work together to restore balance.  As we suspend our breath and become aware of how our respiratory system works, the mystery of breath is revealed.

Session 2 -  Full Yogic breath and Energy Lock.

Full Yogic Breath is a three-part-breath where you first completely fill your lungs with air through the three parts in a conscious slow inhalation and then you exhale in reverse order.  The three parts are the lower abdomen (diaphragm and ribs), mid-chest (side rib and back spine) and upper chest and shoulders. This deep breathing is a foundation for other yogic practices such as kriya.

Internal locks(contracting of certain muscles), known as bandhas are used to direct prana (life force) and boost the body’s ability to heal. We will look at 1 commonly practiced lock. Mula Bandha (root lock) is when you squeeze the muscle between the anus and the genital ( perineum).  This lock balances the upward and downward energy currents and is great for balance and grounding. With constant practice, the energy lock has the ability to revitalize your endocrine system and rejuvenate every cell in your body.

Session 3 -  Mantra Invocation

In yogic philosophy the breath has a mantra. “so hum” ( I am that). Used as a contemplation or reflection mantra this practice heightens the mind-body connection and your connection to the greater universe. As you inhale repeat the mantra  “so”, As you exhale repeat the mantra “hum”. Let your mind be focused on the breath and allow the mind to flow with the breath. The breath should not be jerky or shallow, it should not be noisy, and no conscious pause.

Session 4  - Full Breathwork Advance Practice

Breathwork is a very powerful practice to incorporate into your wellness practice.  In times where you feel like you have very little control, breathwork can be the perfect tool to restore your sense of calmness leaving you alert and in control. The benefits are many but to truly realize the full potential, practicing with the right techniques and consistency is fundamental. These are your keys.
In the last session, I will take you through a guided practice that encompasses the advanced level components covered in prior sessions to give you a profound experience.

When you take the breath practice from doing the breath to allowing the breath to emerge with its own  rhythm and  become the witness to the process– TRANSFORMATION HAPPENS at a deep  CELLULAR LEVEL

Program Considerations & Safety

Breathwork has the potential to cause intense physical and emotional feelings to the surface as the body releases stuck energy.  For this reason, and also to optimize the effectiveness of breathwork, the following is recommended.

  • Prepare a comfortable space where you can lie down ( optional) and listen to the instructions.

  • Make sure you are not on a full stomach.

  • After the session, take time to relax or meditate and drink lots of water.

  • If you have a chronic medical condition such as cardiovascular or heart issues, pregnant, history of panic attacks, mental illness, please seek medical advice before you start any Breathwork program.

  • As a participant, you acknowledge that this is a wellness event.

May we all find abundance and presence in the moment.
